Light Novel & Manga Haul February-March 2025

This haul combines the light novels and manga for February and March. I had enough books to post a small haul for February, but due to various reasons, I ended up unable to post. Five were obtained in February and the other three in March.

In February, I got two fanbooks, one light novel, and two manga. In March, I got two light novels and one manga. Some things are from Amazon, some are gifts, some are from Barnes & Noble, and some are from Thrift Books. I’m planning to start prioritizing Thrift Books as my main source for online orders.

Light Novels

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 4

Initially, I was stocking up on these to be able to binge later. However, I recently did a reread of the manga, and might be itching for more Apothecary Diaries before the next volume comes out in October. I might be reading these sooner rather than later. It’ll be interesting to see how they differ from the manga.

Volume five comes out next month, May 6th, and volume six comes out August 5th, so that’s two more light novel volumes before October.

What is it?

A Chinese inspired historical mystery romance, mostly taking place inside the Inner Palace of the emperor’s consorts.

Ascendance of a Bookworm, Vol. 24 & 25

These are Part 5 Volumes 3 & 4. I just started Part 4, so it’ll be a while before I get to these. I’m building a buffer ahead of time, so I don’t run out of volumes, and to try catching up to the current print releases. I’m still a few volumes behind on that.

There are a total of twelve volumes in Part 5, so it’s the longest part in the whole series. At the time I’m typing this, the most recent volume to release is Part 5 Volume 8. Reviews for the volumes I have already read and reviewed can be found in the Index.

What is it?

An isekai about a bookworm who wakes up as a five-year-old girl in a world where books are unobtainable by the general public, so she decides to make her own and strive to make them more accessible.

Manga

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 1 & 13

It should be pretty obvious that I already have volume one of The Apothecary Diaries, since I’ve been actively reviewing the series. This version is a special Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition. It has alternate cover art that stands out more than the standard volume. It costs $4 more than the regular one, but it includes six pages of exclusive color art from an Apothecary Diaries volume 13 special edition booklet, two pages of black and white art from the same booklet, and four pages of color story art from the standard volume 1.

The extra art doesn’t spoil anything as far as I can tell. If you’re just starting the series, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. It seems harmless.

I’m pretty sure the volume 13 special edition booklet is something that will not be localized, because otherwise, we probably would not be getting the extra content in this B&N edition.

I couldn’t pass up getting the exclusive edition. Even if it just had an alternate cover, that would have been enough for me to want it for my collection. The regular cover art is fine, but this cover is blatantly more beautiful.

At the time I’m typing this, volume 13 is the most recent volume. I have already read and reviewed it. The next one won’t be out until October, so it’s a pretty long wait compared to the usual three months.

What is it?

Final Fantasy XIV: Eorzea Academy

This manga was a birthday gift. A friend already has it and wants me to read it with them. It’s a stand alone story that puts the characters from the MMO Final Fantasy XIV into a school setting. I don’t know if you actually have to play the game to enjoy it, but if you want to be familiar with all of the characters, it seems like you would need to complete the story up until about the beginning of the Endwalker expansion.

What is it?

A stand alone manga that puts Final Fantasy XIV heroes and villains in a school setting.

Miscellaneous

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Official Fanbooks 2 &3

Both of these were birthday gifts. They kept going out of stock everywhere and became a real pain in the butt to find. Of course, now that I have them, they’re back in stock pretty much everywhere. That seems to be how things tend to work.

I’m reading these where they indicate. Fanbook 2 says to read it after Part 4 Volume 1 of the light novel, so I did. The review is already available. Fanbook 3 says to read it after Part 4 Volume 4 and Royal Academy Stories: First year, which is a side novel. I’m not quite there, yet, but that is when I intend to read it.

Fanbook 4 is apparently getting a physical release this July. It’s long overdue, considering how far ahead the light novel run is. Fanbook 4 is supposed to be read after reading Part 4 Volume 8, and Part 5 is more than halfway done releasing. I hope the fifth fanbook also gets a physical release soon.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is the first series I’ve cared enough to want the fanbooks for, and I think that says a lot about how wonderful it is.

What is it?

Personal & Info

With this volume, I’m now caught up with the current release. Volume fourteen won’t be available until October, so it’ll be a long wait. If I get the itch for more Apothecary Diaries, I have a few of the light novels that I can start reading.

Characters

Maomao’s time after the hunt is pretty chill. She gets to put her hair removal skills from the pleasure district to good use.

Jinshi is a bit more intense and aggressive in this volume.

Gao Shun and Ba Sen don’t get much screen time. After the hunt is over, it’s back to attending Jinshi as usual for Gao Shun.

Li Haku is only briefly in the first chapter to finish up the events regarding the hunt.

Xiaolan’s work contract expires in about six months, so she’s worried about finding a job afterward. A lowly laundry maid doesn’t have any social connections. I think Xiaolan has a good head on her shoulders when it comes to taking care of herself and thinking of the future.

Shisui is as enigmatic as ever. She’s eccentric, but helpful, and seems to be a good friend.

Seki-u is one of the three new ladies-in-waiting working for Consort Gyokuyo. She is the youngest of three sisters, who look like triplets, but are actually a year apart consecutively. Seki-u is the same age as Maomao, and she adorns her hair with a red ribbon to differentiate herself from her sisters, who wear a black or white ribbon. If everything goes well, she might be Maomao’s newest long term friend.

Consort Lishu and her head lady-in-waiting, Kanan, have a mystery for Maomao to solve in the fourth chapter.

Story & Thoughts

The first chapter wraps up the events of the hunting trip. While not action packed, some significant things happen. Most importantly, any mystery that might have been in question about Jinshi is now clear. Anyone who did not catch on sooner should now know Jinshi’s identity and rank.

After returning from the hunting trip, the volume is pretty chill. Due to where the characters live, the series can’t have a stereotypical beach episode. Instead, there’s a bathhouse episode, which focuses on ways maids and ladies-in-waiting can go about trying to make better social connections to plan for the future. This also leads into the main mystery for the volume, which involves Consort Lishu.

I think this is one of the better volumes. There’s a lot I like about it. It’s hilarious that Maomao keeps thinking about Jinshi’s “frog.” I knew she wouldn’t be able to keep that out of her mind. She definitely seems a little traumatized from that revelation. The bathhouse stuff is funny and doesn’t feel pointless.

Most notably, Jinshi’s behavior is different. Maomao is close to the truth, and Jinshi wants very much to bring her into his inner circle. She’s proven herself too useful to keep in the dark, and because of this, Jinshi is much more aggressive. The heavenly eunuch is downright intimidating and menacing in the majority of his appearances. I choose to interpret this as the story building tension, and I’m so sad the next volume is several months away. Thankfully, there isn’t a cliffhanger, but there is a strong implication of important things, that will potentially change Maomao’s life, to come.

Personal & Info

I haven’t been in the mood to read manga for a while, so I’ve been holding onto this volume since I bought it around release. Before reading it, I did a full one through eleven reread. I already have volume thirteen, so a review for that should be up soon, too, if not around the same time as this one.

Characters

Maomao has less opportunity to show off her passions for poison and medicine in this volume due to people dragging her around.

Yinghua and Hongniang are the only of Consort Gyokuyo’s ladies-in-waiting to appear here. We mostly see Yinghua since she participates in the events of the Ghost Stories chapter.

Gyokuyo gets a couple brief appearances in the early parts of the volume, but we don’t see her much.

Shisui, Maomao’s relatively new, bug enthusiast friend, is around for the events of the Ghost Stories chapter. We don’t see her again after that. I’ve seen it said that she works at the laundry, but I’ve also seen it said she is a lady-in-waiting, so I’m not sure which it really is. She’s probably a lady-in-waiting who handles laundry, if I had to guess.

Jinshi is one of the leading characters in this volume. After the first chapter, he takes Maomao away on a summer hunting trip that will take multiple days.

Gao Shun, who is usually Jinshi’s attendant, is not serving that role, this time. He is a guest for the hunt.

Ba Sen, Gao Shun’s son, is serving as Jinshi’s attendant in his father’s place for the duration of the hunting trip.

Li Haku is in charge of dog sitting over the course of the hunting trip.

Story & Thoughts

There are five chapters in this volume, and four of them are relevant to a hunting trip event. The trip does not come to a resolution, so it will continue in the next book. The chapter before the hunting trip is just a quick thing about ladies-in-waiting meeting up at night to tell spooky stories. There isn’t much special there, but it implies a possible real ghost to end the night with a real scare for the characters.

I think the end portion is the best part of the book. Maomao is desperate not to learn anything important that could get her into trouble later or require keeping secrets. So much so, that it leads to a comedic situation.

I think Maomao and Jinshi make some inadvertent progress in their relationship. Not in a healthy way, mind you, but Jinshi’s annoyed assertiveness will probably give Maomao something to think about. Whether she wanted to or not, she learned something she didn’t want to know. Denial won’t change that.

Thankfully, I already have the next volume, so I can continue reading to see what happens next. I’m glad Li Haku is getting some attention. It sounds like he’s steadily moving up in his career, but pairing him with a dog is adorable. Sadly, I don’t think they bothered to name the dog. If they did, they certainly didn’t mention it.

My theory about the plot for the volume is, I think Jinshi was invited on the hunting trip as his actual identity. The identity Maomao is unaware of, but has been revealed to us in a vague fashion by Lakan in another volume. It seems like nobody really knows what his actual identity looks like, since nobody ever sees him, so that would explain the face covering during the trip, and the need for an alias.

Light Novel Haul November-December 2024

Holiday burnout has me running behind schedule, so bare with me while I get back on track. This haul covers all my light novels from November and December. I didn’t buy any regular novels or manga during those months.

This is probably the largest batch of light novels I’ve had so far. Everything is either a gift, or a purchase from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Most of the Amazon purchases came in paper bags, which is why you might see some corner damage in the picture.

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 3

At the moment, I’m just stocking up on this version of the series as they release in physical print. I’ll read them at my leisure eventually, but right now, I’m more focused on the manga version of the series. If you want to see the reviews for those, they can be found in the index. I am looking forward to reading these light novels, but it’ll likely be a while.

Ascendance of a Bookworm, Vol. 10-21

These are Part 3 Volumes 3 through 5, and the entirety of Part 4, which is nine volumes. I’ve been hyper-addicted to this series, so I’ve been getting as many volumes as I feasibly can. Reviews for the rest of Part 3 are done and ready to go, so those will likely be up soon.

I’m starting to reach the point where there will be side story novels to collect. As far as I’m aware, there is a side story series that has at least two volumes, and at least one book specifically involving Rozemyne’s classmates from Part 4, so that gives me at least three extra books to read. The Fanbooks and side novels all start to be applicable in parts 3-5. It’s not as expansive as say, My Hero Academia’s universe, but I love that it has bonus side stuff.

I’ve never really been interested in getting fanbooks before. My guess is because nothing resonated with me enough to warrant bothering with them. I love Ascendance of a Bookworm so much that I knew I had to have them when I found out they existed. This one was a Christmas gift, and I’ve already read it, so if the review is not up, it will be soon.

As of right now, there are five known fanbooks for the series. Only three of them are currently published in physical print in English. I plan on getting all of them eventually, but the second one is currently out of stock everywhere, so it’ll likely be a while until I can get a copy.

This haul contains all comics, light novels, and manga for the months of September and October. I had enough to post a haul at the end of September, but I ended up delaying long enough that I decided to just do a two month haul instead.

Everything here is purchased in new condition. Some books come from Amazon, some from Barnes & Noble, and some from local stores.

Archie: Halloween Special

The only thing Archie I’ve ever tried is the TV show, Riverdale. Archie and Sabrina are in the same universe, so they often have crossovers. I like Sabrina, but I’m new to the comics, so, Halloween Archie special crossover with Sabrina.

What is it?

One-shot Halloween comic of Archie, featuring Sabrina. People not familiar with the comics would likely recognize the characters from the Riverdale TV show.

Sabrina The Teenage Witch: Annual Spectaculars & Holiday Special

These three comics are not trade paperbacks. They are stand alone stories as single comics with the carboard backing and sleeves to keep them in good condition. Every year or so, Archie Comics releases an annual comic for Sabrina, that’s what these Annual Spectaculars are. The Holiday Special is just a separate one-shot story.

I’ve always liked everything Sabrina ever since I was a young child. These were given to me to try to encourage me to read more non-manga comics. I have not read any Sabrina comics before, except one four book series that was published in a manga style, so these are a new format of the Sabrina universe for me.

What is it?

One-shot comics of Sabrina The Teenage Witch. People not familiar with the comics would likely recognize the character from the old TV show or the more recent Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Light Novels

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 2

I love the manga for this series so much that I waited years for the light novel to get a physical release. Unfortunately, I had some bad luck with this volume. After ordering, the bubble packet was delivered empty, with a giant hole in the side, as if the book were too heavy and just fell out somewhere along the way. Customer service was contacted and a new volume was sent to replace it.

I ended up giving the replacement book a quick mold treatment upon arrival, because it had some gross black stuff on it, and I wanted to be absolutely certain it was not mold. It probably wasn’t mold, but the treatment was also the only way I could think of to get the gross stuff off of the book. Needless to say, my experience getting a copy of this was stressful and frustrating.

On the upside, the book itself is great. The light novel volumes feel durable, and decently thick. This one has twenty chapters, plus a prologue and epilogue, which is a lot for a light novel. It’s definitely a quality product.

Ascendance of a Bookworm, Vol. 6-9

This series is numbered a little strangely. It’s broken up into parts with their own volume numbers. These volumes are Part 2, volumes 3 and 4, and Part 3, volumes 1 and 2.

Most of these came from Barnes & Noble, because that’s the only place I could find Part 2, Volume 3 in stock. Part 2, Volume 4 and Part 3, Volume 2 were included in the order, because I wanted free shipping, and it doesn’t hurt to have more volumes ahead of time. I could only find Part 3, Volume 1 on Crunchyroll, so I had to order that, too, since Barnes & Noble didn’t have that one, and I didn’t want to have a gap. As I collect the series, I keep encountering volumes going out of stock in most places, so I end up panic buying multiple books at a time.

Despite not wanting to read it right away, I did purchase this volume on the day of release. Reviews for volumes one through eleven are available, so at least I’m not too far behind.

Blue Exorcist, Vol. 8 & 9

I can say for sure that I have no plans to binge read this series this year. Maybe next year I’ll have more volumes and more motivation. As it is currently, I’m not in the mood for manga, and I’d rather have more than just these nine volumes before digging into this series.

An action adventure starring demons and exorcists. The main character wants to be an exorcist even though he is the son of Satan.

I haven’t been buying many books lately, so my hauls are smaller and farther apart. This haul covers both May and June, because I didn’t have enough books to bother posting one in May. The books are a mix of things ordered from Amazon and others purchased from a local store. Three of the light novels were gifted to me. All of the books are in new condition.

Light Novels

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 1

I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. This has only been available in digital format until fairly recently, and I don’t like to read light novels or manga on digital devices. I absolutely love the manga, but the light novel is the original material. Now that the physical editions are releasing, I’m excited to read them and see what the similarities and differences are.

The book itself is great. It feels durable, and it’s thicker than I was expecting. It’s definitely a quality product.

Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, Vol. 3, 4 & 5

Every volume I have of this series has been gifted to be by the friend who initially recommended it to me. Based on the little I’ve seen of the anime, I think the light novel is the best way to experience the story. I just like how clearly everything is shown. The character stats and skills, the forum posts, and the admin sections are all so clear in this format. The light novel is apparently the original content for the series, anyway.

A funny and interesting VRMMORPG themed series.

Manga

Kaiju No. 8, Vol. 2 & 3

My first volume was a gift from a friend who had an extra. I put off reading it for a while, because my to-read pile is absolutely huge. I think I got around to it shortly before the anime was announced. Now the anime is ahead of me, and I need to read more of these before continuing. My personal collection is a little behind, because I borrowed volumes two and three before owning them.

What is it?

A sci-fi police force series with strong Attack on Titan similarities.

Soul Eater: The Perfect Edition, Vol. 4

I’m still working on a buffer for these. They should make a good spooky season binge at some point. It looks like the volumes are still currently releasing, and there are a lot of them for me to catch up to.

What is it?

A fantasy setting where people are trained to be warriors called meisters and wield weapons, that are actually people who become the weapon. They collect tainted souls in hopes of someday turning their weapons into their ultimate form to be used by Death himself. Sometimes this task involves saving the world.

This series is said to be in the same universe as Fire Force, which I have not yet read.

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 11

I highly recommend this series. It’s one of my favorites. I keep up with it pretty closely, so reviews for the volumes can be found in the index section. The review for this volume is already available.

Recently, I watched the new anime for the series. It’s accurate to the manga, except for some word choices and leaving out a few details that don’t change the story. The anime also does a better job generally expressing the emotions the characters are feeling. So, if you like the manga, or would rather watch a show than read, you can watch the anime without losing anything from the story. No adaptation is ever perfect, but this is definitely one of the better ones.

Blue Exorcist, Vol. 7

I’m not sure if it will be this year, but I’m hoping to build a decent buffer of these to be able to binge during spooky season. The series is pretty long and ongoing, so I’m not exactly sure how many volumes I want to have before I start. I know I’m going to like it, so I want to make sure it’s a good chunk.

What is it?

Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Vol. 4

Reviews for volumes 1-3 are already available in the index. I like this series, and I’m trying to get more friends to try it. It’s obviously still pretty new if it only has four volumes, but I think anyone who likes Fullmetal Alchemist would probably enjoy it.

What is it?

An action adventure featuring spiritual duo companions and special powers as well as a generations old feud.

Princess Jellyfish, Vol. 1

This series is a difficult to explain. I saw the anime and loved it, but it was incomplete. From what I can tell, the English release of the manga is considered an omnibus, without actually saying omnibus or special edition or anything on it. It’s at least as thick as a two-in-one. I’m looking forward to reading the series to see how similar it is to the anime and seeing what happens after the parts where the anime ended. Upon a quick flip through, the art is beautiful.

What is it?

A series about various types otaku living together and exploring a love of jellyfish and fashion.

Jinshi isn’t entirely significant to the main story of the volume. He mostly plays the part of an observer this time around.

Empress Dowager Anshi, the current Emperor’s mother, is the main focus. The majority of the volume revolves around a favor she requests of Maomao.

Story & Thoughts

There are five chapters. The first is part two of The Shrine of Choosing, continuing from where volume ten leaves off. After that, the book focuses more on the Empress Dowager and what the previous Emperor was like.

I find this volume particularly interesting, because it digs more deeply into the details of the royalty. Up until now, we’ve only seen the Empress Dowager in passing. Now we get to see her in the majority of this book. Four out of five of the chapters are practically all about her.

The three part section by the title of The Late Emperor is all about how things were when the previous emperor was in power. Also, how the Empress Dowager attained her rank, and more about the births of her two children. The time of the previous emperor honestly sounds pretty terrible. Some progressive laws were passed thanks to Anshi, and are still getting better with the current emperor, but a lot of shady stuff was going on behind the scenes. I’ll let the book take care of explaining all of that, but my point is, the political intrigue of this volume is very interesting. It’s like getting a lore dump.

This section of the series might make some readers uncomfortable. It readdresses the inappropriate age preference the previous emperor had. The age of the Empress Dowager at the time of the Emperor’s birth was bleeped out earlier in the series when it was mentioned in passing at the first Garden Banquet. At this point in the series, it blatantly gives a number. We can all agree the previous emperor’s preferences were disgusting. I don’t think readers should let these parts ruin their opinion of the whole series.

I think the most significant thing in the volume is that we finally get a for sure answer about the mystery around Jinshi. Now, we’re left wondering how long it will be until Maomao finds out the truth, and if she will care at all once she has the answers.

As one of the few volumes that doesn’t end in the middle of a multipart section, I can’t help wondering if this particular ending is foreboding or encouraging. The contextual meaning seems a little unclear in that regard.

It took me longer than I would have liked to get around to reading this. I ended up doing a full series reread to refresh my memory, and just because I wanted to. The reread was immensely enjoyable. My review for volume eleven will be a little late, but I’ll get to it as soon as I can.

Characters

Maomao is wonderful, as always. I absolutely adore her.

Jinshi is ever present and extra stressed. He does not seem to be having a good time in this volume.

Shenlu is an older lady who runs the clinic. She’s far older than the typical court lady, likely due to her special skills.

Xing is the Head Lady-in-Waiting at the Crystal Palace. She works for Lihua.

Story & Thoughts

This volume is pretty jam packed. It has six chapters. Five of them are multipart events. Of course, the first one is the continuation of the final chapter from volume nine. But, aside from that, there is a three chapter event, and the last chapter is part one for another multipart event.

Part two of The Moon Fairy is fantastic. I was all smiles for that chapter. While I enjoyed it, I don’t think I can say the same for Jinshi.

The Inner Court has several rules that make important things, like medical care, more difficult than they should be. Maomao learns about more of these things, and sees some of the imminent problems the Inner Court is likely to face as an eventuality. It’s clear the current emperor has many things in a transitional state and has not yet fully addressed some of the policy reforms.

On that subject, I think the social aspects of the Inner Palace need addressing. That’s more of an issue for the consorts to deal with, though, and some of them are not aware of the things that need to be fixed. There always seems to be one problem or another at the Crystal Palace, but Lihua seems ready to start addressing those issues.. I hope Lishu can wise up to some of the negativity involving her own ladies-in-waiting at some point.

It’s pretty funny we only just now find out that Maomao has been breaking highly enforced rules this whole time.

I’m surprised Jinshi didn’t express anything to Maomao about the scratches on her face after the drama had passed. He’s usually more concerned about anything that hurts her. The face is also very important inside the Inner Palace because of how much of the social structure there is based on looks, so I thought there should have been a little more attention drawn to that.

All in all, the series is holding up very well. My usual rating tends to be a solid four, with only the occasional dip to a three. It’s definitely one of my current favorites.

I didn’t have enough books in October to bother doing a haul at the end of the month, so this haul combines the manga from both October and November. All of these books are in new condition. Two of the manga are Amazon purchases. The rest are from a local store. I prefer to buy locally if I’m able.

The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 10

I highly recommend this series. It’s become one of my favorites. I keep up with the series pretty closely, so reviews of most, if not all, of the volumes can be found in the index section. Volume eleven is scheduled for release in March of 2024.

There is an anime out now. I’m not sure how accurate to the manga it is, because I have not yet seen it. It’s on my list of things to watch.

What is it?

A Chinese inspired historical mystery romance, mostly taking place inside the Inner Palace of the emperor’s consorts.

Blue Exorcist, Vol. 3 & 4

I’m building up a buffer for this series to hopefully read it for fall of 2024. My first exposure to the series was the anime. I’ve only seen the first season, but I absolutely loved it. I hear the manga is a little bit different, but I expect to enjoy it just as much.

What is it?

An action adventure starring demons and exorcists. The main character wants to be an exorcist even though he is the son of Satan.

My Happy Marriage, Vol. 3 & 4

Volumes one and two already have reviews available.

I’m excited to read more of this series. The first two volumes are great. These two catch me up to current release. Five was supposed to be out this past October, but I think it got delayed. I think it’s slated to be released this coming January of 2024.

There is also a light novel version of the series, which I plan on getting eventually. I think that has more volumes out than the manga, so it is probably a bit farther into the story.

I haven’t seen the anime, yet, but I’m excited about it.

A Cinderella inspired historical romance with paranormal aspects.

Noragami Omnibus, Vol. 8 (volumes 22-24)

I love the anime for this, but unfortunately it’s one of the many that were never finished. The manga is apparently supposed to be darker than the show, but better. I’m looking forward to reading this series. It’s just a matter of figuring out when. I’ll probably start it on a whim one of the days when I’m not sure what to read.
